Take the bandage off after a couple hours and don't re-wrap it. Wash the tattoo two times a day, morning and evening, with lukewarm water and a mild, unscented soap. Rinse it well and let it air dry completely. It's best not to use a bath towel to dry it, since bath towels can sometimes carry bacteria like E. coli or staph.
For the first three days, repeat that process, clean, dry, then a thin layer of unscented ointment, two times a day. Keep the layer thin; a heavy, caked-on layer traps moisture and slows healing instead of helping it. After day three, switch over to a light layer of unscented lotion for the rest of the healing process.
It takes about two weeks for a tattoo to heal. During that time, don't soak it in bathtubs, pools, or open water. Don't pick, scratch, or itch it.
